My parents died of AIDS two years ago. After that, my health deteriorated; I became thinner and thinner, had red spots on my skin and an unstoppable cough. The doctor’s diagnosis confirmed that I had become infected with HIV/AIDS”. As a 14-year-old boy, I could only lie in bed and await death, until World Vision took me to the hospital for treatment. I have become healthier and have joined a group to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS for youth. I can go to school now.

With 375,000,000 children living within its borders, the country of India has the highest population of children in the world. Of these children, 6-10% or 90,000,000 are born with a physical disability. Poverty stricken families do not have the means to take care of them, so they abandon them. These children do not have access to education and healthcare.
Homelessness and child labor are serious problems in India. It is estimated that there are 200,000 street children in Kolkata. They make their living by picking up trash, shining shoes and begging. Although sleeping on street puts them in danger these children have no choice and feel that there isn’t much hope for the future.
World Vision is transforming the lives of street children by setting up centers to provide food, clothing, education and skill training programs in Kolkata and Mumbai.
